Virginia-specific guidance that most moving checklists leave out.
Many Virginia HOAs require a move-in reservation, refundable deposit ($200-$500), and proof of insurance from your movers. Check your HOA documents at least two weeks before your move date. Some communities restrict moving to weekdays only or specific hours.
High-rise and mid-rise condos in Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Virginia Beach require elevator reservations for move-in/move-out. Reserve at least 10 business days in advance. Some buildings charge a non-refundable service fee and limit you to a 4-hour window.
If you are moving to Virginia from another state, you have 30 days to register your vehicle with the DMV and obtain a Virginia driver's license. You will need a Virginia safety inspection within 30 days. Plan a DMV visit during your first week.
Schedule utility transfers at least 5 business days before closing. Dominion Energy, Virginia Natural Gas, and local water authorities all require separate setup. Your Settle agent provides a utility checklist specific to your locality.
Virginia summers are hot and humid. If you are moving between June and September, avoid storing boxes in garages or non-climate-controlled spaces. Electronics, artwork, and wine collections should ride in the cab, not the truck bed.
